In 2024, we are celebrating the 200-year anniversary of the publication of Sadi Carnot’s Reflections on the Motive Power of Fire and on Machines Fitted to Develop that Power (“Réflexions sur la puissance motrice du feu et sur les machines propres à développer cette puissance”).
This book laid the foundations of the 2nd Law of Thermodynamics. Although it encountered little success at the time of its publication, its content has been brought to light thanks to Clapeyron and Thomson. Subsequently, Clausius introduced entropy paving the way to the development of modern classical thermodynamics under a form that is still taught today to physicists and engineers.
From the examination of machines emerged macroscopic thermodynamics and it evolved throughout the 20th century into various subfields exploring, among others, microscopic scales and non-equilibrium processes.
Today, Thermodynamics is a discipline that is used and investigated by many scientists and engineers. Its applications are diverse encompassing power production, heating/air-conditioning/refrigeration, biology, climatology, material sciences (and the list can be extended).
2024 is therefore an opportune moment to bring together thermodynamicists linked to Belgium (in a broad sense), from both Academia and Industry. This meeting is the chance to discover and bridge different fields of thermodynamics and different applications, but also to share ideas, methods and technological developments… and to show how much thermodynamics is a useful and central discipline today, possibly combined with other disciplines.
In the current context of energy transition, we hope that this meeting will help highlighting the role of thermodynamics, combined with other disciplines, in the design and operation of energy system from elementary energy conversion devices to large energy systems.

The Symposium offers international researchers an opportunity to present their current research during poster sessions.

Two tracks are available:
Track 1 (full papers): This track is for completed work, and a full paper (maximum of 10 pages) is required.
Track 2 (short papers): This track is for planned and on-going research. Participants are expected to submit a short paper of maximum of 4 pages.

Selected papers will be invited to submit an extended version of their paper to a special issue of Applied Thermal Engineering. The best papers for both tracks will also be recognized with awards.
